My Kitch’n in the Marché Couvert des Batignolles

Paris is certainly not a city where it’s easy to be vegetarian, let alone vegan! I am neither, but I do like to go to a café where they do green smoothies and provide alternative milks. Funnily enough, a café that does just that opened right near my place in le marché couvert des batignolles.

Jennifer spoilt me rotton this morning while slowly waking from my slumber.

My Kitch’n is run by a sweet Swedish lady, Jennifer, who is passionate about raw and vegan foods.

I had the Green Machine smoothie: peppermint, avocado, spinach, apple, spirulina, dates and ground linseed.

Jennifer made me the freshest coffee. She ground the coffee beans before my eyes and brewed the coffee so it was hot and the aromas were so rich and perfect for the sleepy Sunday morning.

Have you ever heard of nut milk? Jennifer made fresh hazelnut milk right in front of my eyes to have in our coffee. Hazelnut milk is rich in Vitamin E, folic acid and Vitamins B1, B2 and B6. It imparts a more “nutty” flavor than other nut milks such as almond, which, in my opinion, is much more neutral of a flavor.

This, my friends, is a raw carrot cake. It makes you realise how sweet carrots are naturally.

This healthy snack bar certainly got me going this morning! The granola bar had oat flakes, ground up flax, hemp and sesame seeds, raisins, dates, dried figs + apricots,a bit of cacao, maca and aguyamanto

I highly recommend a visit to My Kitch’n for an all vegan, 100% organic treat:

#1- In My Basket

I hope you all had a lovely weekend lovelies. Saturday was a gorgeously sunny day here in Paris so I got excited and took out my basket and flask of coffee and myself out to market to get some fresh vegetables. I do that every Saturday, but seeing it’s an important part of my weekend I thought you may enjoy knowing what fresh food I get each weekend, depending on the season and what I’m cooking, and showing you what I cook with it all. How does that sound? This little series will give you an insight into my Saturday mornings at market here in Paris.

My pretty pink glitter flask that I took my coffee with me in. I’m such a girl.

A bag of fresh organic kale. Obsessed, much?

Loaf of sourdough bread that had literally just been pulled out of the oven when I got it from my bakery.

With my fresh ingredients I made myself a kale, sprouted lentil, raw beetroot, grated ginger, and roasted beetroot (which I roast in coconut oil) salad with a dash of olive oil. The bread was still warm so I boiled two eggs and had them with some salted butter on toast. I can’t tell you how good it was.

Brunch at Sésame

I really enjoyed brunch at Sésame with a dear friend last Sunday. It snowed outside as we sat in this cosy café sipping on coffee, fresh juice and eating bagels.

Oh la la livia’s first Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a harvest festival, to give thanks. It was the first time I’d celebrated it being Australian, and it was great to do so with an American like Meg who really paved the way.

It made me think about what I am grateful in my life. The answer is, what aren’t I grateful for? Everything is just perfect! (oh, besides one thing, the Winter in France but there is even a silver lining to that problematic… Winter fashion…! Superficial? Maybe.)

Just look at that wonderful spread she put on for us! The garlic green beans were my favourite and her mashed potato was so creamy and warming in Winter.

I’m mad for polaroids so we took a bunch of them.

It was just perfect! I can’t wait until the next!

A unicorn and deer afternoon in Paris

To make life sweeter, I love my afternoon latté and a little treat. On Thursday I decided to get myself a handful of choukettes (a delightful little puff of French pastry with sugar on top- not to be overdone in quantity). Coffee time is so cosy at the moment here in my apartment because the sun goes down early and I turn on the big lamp on our living room which gives a honey glow to the room and I sink into the couch with my latté.

I am so smitten with my new cups from Claudia from Superfumi.

Being Australian, I absolutely love European animals because my childhood was koalas, kangaroos and possums. I find deers so precious. Their big eyes! Obviously my unicorn obsession is just because I’m a girly girl.

I highly reccomend you visit her Etsy shop here because she has a new range that just came out. All of the products are handmade in the UK.

What treats do you have planned for the weekend?

Cupcake Camp Paris III at Comptoir Général for Make A Wish Foundation

Cupcake Camp III was held last Saturday at the Comptoir Général. All of the Cupcake pros in Paris were there, like SugarDaze and Beauty Cakes and all of the proceeds went to Make a Wish Foundation France. In total we made a little over 5500 euros, which really shows the wonderful participation of everybody and great spirit.

Kristen from The Kale Project made kale cupcakes and you can click here to get the recipe.

The theme was Halloween so many of the cupcakes were oh-so-spooky!

These lovely ones were made by la Dinette de Nelly, a lovely young French woman who I found to be very creative and welcoming.

I made Flourless Chocolate Cake for those of you wanting a little break from the flour after downing a couple of high-carbohydrate cupcakes (hehe!). I used the same recipe as this one, but I didn’t put in the raspberries this time. My amazing sprinkles came from The Sprinkle Box Shop. More details here.

Thanks to Elodie Garbé for her marvelous illustrations, as always. She can draw whatever you want for a very reasonable price.

My J took a while to choose his cupcakes but came back with these three:

It was really a wonderful day and I’d like to thank Bryan and Cat for making it happen! I can’t wait for next year.

In other news, if you want the chance to win some lovely soap, click here. Or else a funky bracelet by OOAKjewelz, click here.

Want to decorate cupcakes? My readers have been offered a 10% discount for the month of November with the code PARIS10 on this website. All you have to do is enter the coupon code at checkout.

The Best Cupcake Sprinkles I’ve Ever Seen

I was lucky enough to be sent a huge box of sprinkles from Laura from The Sprinkle Box Shop. Not only are her sprinkles bright and colourful, but they come in generous sizes and she sends them off quickly! The quality is really high, they don’t crumple or discolour like many sprinkles do.

Laura is a young and inspired lady that started her business whilst organising her son’s 2nd birthday party last year. Laura had ideas racing through her mind at 3:00 and 4:00 in the morning while feeding their at the time 4- month-old baby girl. This turned into details on paper, which turned into conversations and connections, resulting in her own business a year later.

There is not a single colour that she doesn’t do!

I made flourless chocolate cupcakes with chocolate icing and the sprinkles rocked my socks!

Click here or here to access her shop, and like her facebook page here!

If you need wonderful illustrations done for you like the one just above I highly reccomment Elodie Garbé who is a young French graphic designer and illustrator. Her new site is here and her blog here.

Healthy Chai Tea: One of My Biggest Joys in Life

Chai is a great coffee substitute. From the moment I had my first chai at the young age of around 9, I was smitten.

Unlike coffee, chai has many inherently beneficial properties. The black tea in chai is rich in antioxidants and the spices in chai have been used for thousands of years to promote general health and well-being, as well as to treat various ailments.

According to Ayurvedic (Ancient Indian) philosophy and medicine, these spices are considered to be “sattvic,” or calming, vitalizing and mentally clarifying – The perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life!

Here is why:

Cinnamon is thought to increase circulation and open breathing, increase awareness and vitality, and reduce fatigue. It is also reputed to be an aphrodisiac! (Hubba hubba!)

Cardamom
A popular spice in both the Indian and Chinese preparations, cardamom is said to benefit the lungs, kidneys, and heart. It is also a mood elevator.

Clove
Native to the spice islands of Indonesia, cloves have been used by the Chinese since 300 BC, and came to Europe in the 4th and 5th Centuries AD. Cloves have pain-relieving and antiseptic attributes. Like pepper and ginger, clove is also used to synergistically increase the potency of other herbal blends.

Black Pepper
Widely used to support circulation and metabolism, black pepper can help to alleviate chronic coldness. (We can use more of that here in Paris, in the winter!)

Nutmeg
Nutmeg has been used for centuries to ease sciatica and promote the digestion of heavy foods. It was also used by ancient Arab physicians to treat kidney and lymph problems.

Chinese Star Anise
Traditional Asian herbalists credit star anise with a variety of properties. It’s used frequently as a cough remedy and to freshen the breath.

Ginger
Long valued as a stimulant for the circulatory and the immune systems, ginger has been used to treat such disparate conditions as impotence and motion sickness. I’m mad about ginger. Read my post here.

Fennel
An important medicinal plant in the royal herb gardens of medieval France and Germany, fennel is still widely used to treat both kidney and ocular problems, as well as laryngitis.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. You want a chai latté? Please do not, for the love of the human race, go drink them at Starbucks. Not only are they expensive, but the milk is genetically modified, and it isn’t real chai. It’s concentrated sugar with favour added. This is not chai. What you need is a saucepan, good organic fresh milk (unlike what is easily found here in France) and a good chai mix. You boil everything up together in the milk and strain it after a few minutes of simmering.

I will soon post my own chai recipe. I hope you love and it gets you through the winter time. I certainly need it!

I am also going to attempt chai shortbread. Om nom nom.

Oh La La Livia’s Weekend

J’s best friend got hitched on Saturday. It was a lovely day, and everybody had a good dance and laugh. After all that champagne I’m excited to get back into my healthy routine with kale this week and lots of Supergreens.

Winter is nearly here so I am starting to adjust our diet. It’s important to have warming slow-cooked foods that are easy to digest and soups, avoiding too many raw vegetables especially at night time.

I’ve been enjoying lots of salmon and avocado lately. Must be craving my Omega 3′s!

How do you get ready for Winter?

I wish you all a beautiful Monday and a lovely week! xx

How Do You Do Your Cheese Platter?

Living in France, cheese does play a big role in everyday life. I go through phases where I love it and hate it. At the moment I’m going through a stage where I still am crazy about the stuff,  but not at night time. I like a bit of fruit with it to break it up, and I always make sure I have a soft goat’s cheese.

How do you do yours?
